Rest in Egypt or in another exotic country can be ruined by the so-called Pharaoh's Curse, otherwise known as travelers' diarrhea or Montezuma's revenge. However, this is not the only country where you can get this ailment. Where does Pharaoh's Revenge come from? Is it contagious? How to prevent it?
The Pharaoh's curse is the most predictable disease associated with travel. It affects 30% to 70% of travelers. It is caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites living in unsanitary conditions of restaurants in tourist destinations. Travelers' diarrhea concerns the gastrointestinal tract, it is manifested by abdominal cramps and diarrhea. It is most often caused by eating food and drinking water that the body is not used to.
Until recently, it was thought that to prevent Montezuma's revenge, food and drink should be cooked, boiled, or peeled before consumption. If this was not possible, one had to refrain from eating. However, numerous studies have shown that tourists who followed these rules were still sick.
Tourists' diarrhea is most often affected by tourists traveling to Mexico, Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asian countries (outside of Japan).
The most common symptoms are watery diarrhea and abdominal cramps. The occurrence of other ailments depends on the cause of the disease. Other symptoms may include:
Yes. A sick person can infect others, regardless of whether they are caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites.
The disease usually lasts from 3 to 7 days, rarely life-threatening.
This is the most common complication of this ailment, which you can not underestimate, especially in young children. Numerous diarrhea, vomiting and nausea can lead to a rapid loss of fluid that you can't catch up with drinking water. Look out for these dehydration symptoms:
Oral hydration therapy (electrolytes), which you can buy at any pharmacy in the tourist town, will bring you relief from dehydration.
Do you remember that we have already written about the universal action of probiotics and prebiotics?
Scientific research and so-called meta-analyzes, i.e. analyzes of many studies, have proven the effectiveness of some probiotic strains in the pharaoh's curse. Which? Belong to them:
Boiled water, coffee or tea from boiled water, bottled water, beer or wine are safe drinks that you can drink. Avoid ice because it can come from contaminated water. The safest way to get safe water is to boil it for a few minutes or use chemical disinfectants based on iodine or chlorine.
Portable water filters are not a good way to obtain potable water due to a lack of research on their effectiveness. Do not drink water straight from the tap! Many pathogenic organisms can survive even in hot tap water.
Avoid meals made from raw ingredients such as salads, uncooked vegetables and fruits (unless you peel them yourself), unpasteurized milk and dairy products, raw meat and seafood. Cooked and still hot dishes are quite safe, however, do not eat some fish (such as barracuda or puffer fish) and seafood (such as those from the West Indies, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean) even after cooking.
