However, yes, the need for so-called macronutrients increases in pregnant women. Macronutrients include carbohydrates e.g. bread or pasta, proteins e.g. meat or legumes, and fats e.g. oil.
The need for micronutrients, i.e. vitamins, minerals and trace minerals during pregnancy, increases even more than the need for macronutrients.
Although many women may be satisfied with a well-planned diet rich in nutrients, doctors, and probably you, as a mother-to-be, do not want to risk missing anything for your baby. There are many reasons why something could go wrong and the consequences could be irreversible.
You may need supplements to replenish the missing vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals for pregnant women for the following reasons:
Sometimes the best diet is not enough when a new life is developing in you. It is not worth the risk when, for example, folic acid deficiency may lead to serious birth defects in a child. It is only beginning to talk about in Poland, but in the United States, the MTHFR mutation has been an important topic for years. However, you don't need to study genetics to understand it. For starters, it is enough to know that women with the MTHFR gene mutation need a methylated form of folic acid. Reaching for ordinary folic acid in vitamins for pregnant women can lead to complications.
