Robert never complained about his health, but when he was forced to one day stop the training in the pool because of the rapid heartbeat and feeling of anxiety, he was horrified. The next day he felt very weak, even like a broken trabant. His mind, as it were, was foggy - it was difficult for him to gather his thoughts and he did not want to. In fact, he would go to the doctor for the rest of his willpower. This, when he briefly examined the patient, made a preliminary diagnosis - tetany. Perhaps Robert is sick with her.
Tetany is relatively simple in the mechanism, but very tricky to diagnose the disease. It results in a series of unpleasant sensations for the patient, in the form of the whole spectrum of "obstruction", such as tingling, numbness or changes in skin temperature (so-called paresthesia). Tonic contractions and clonic contractions may be particularly severe. The first relies on increased muscle tension for some time, while the second can be described as muscle spasms having the character of convulsions, separated from each other by periods of flaccidity. As if you were a smartphone and had vibrations with every text message. Do you feel it?
A physician examining a patient who is suspected of having a tetany has at the start to "choose" two of her forms - oedematous tetany (hypocalcemic) and latent tetany (otherwise known as spasmomophilia). We are already explaining what is hidden under these names.
In the first case, muscle hyperactivity, or more precisely nervous, is usually caused by the body's hormonal imbalance. It may also be caused by autoimmune diseases that lead to the destruction of our parathyroid glands. Finally, "it ends" on the lack of calcium in the blood. Acute pancreatitis, impaired intestinal absorption and powerful vitamin D deficiencies are the most common causes responsible for problems with the absorption of this mineral.
Tężyczka can also be the result of the use of diuretics (nettle, purge, but really in large quantities), as well as alcohol abuse (flushes out electrolytes). Regarding the causes of the more insidious latent tetany, the case concerns the huge deficiencies of a key mineral - magnesium, the element of life next to calcium. But the moment here, the mystification of this form of the disease lies in the fact that it is not the shortages of magnesium that are its main cause - the culprit is again calcium. It's just that hyperventilation and magnesium deficiency often go along with it.
Slowly. Let's start with tangible oxy-tetrum. Well, its first symptom / symptom is usually tingle felt mainly in the fingers of the hands and around the mouth (similar feeling can give wetness around the mouth cut in half orange). Then the limbs may become contusive, and more specifically the fingers, as well as the impression of facial muscle tension. Symptoms that accompany the above are often feelings of anxiety and fears (sometimes strong and sudden). In extreme cases, the patient may even lose consciousness and his body will shake convulsions. Due to the latter "fireworks" that may accompany the attack of tetany, often people who are treacherously affected by it are considered to be epilepsy patients. And this is "only" tetany ...
It is worth mentioning here that this disease is sometimes a life-threatening condition - during a spasm a contraction may close the larynx to us, which in fact ... prevents proper breathing. Such cases require the doctor's intervention as soon as possible. Fortunately, they are rare, and due to the fact that the tetany is most often treated in a hospital, we are basically safe (staff behind the wall).
A specific symptom, and at the same time a cause that can trigger tetany attack, is hyperventilation, a state in which we subconsciously start too quickly and breathe too deeply. You should then remain calm and if something hurts, visit the doctor immediately. Under the mask, for example, abdominal pain may be just the tetany offense caused by hyperventilation. In people with heart disease, arrhythmia may be induced - disturbances in the work of this key muscle consisting in its uneven beating. People suffering from indirect tetany may experience (temporarily fortunately) memory disorders, insomnia, general weakness and difficulty concentrating. Very often, the tetany itself is erroneously diagnosed as ... neurosis - it gives such similar signals from the body.
However, as to the symptoms of the latent version of tetany, i.e. spasmophilia, there are basically no such that would clearly indicate it. And here lies the dog buried.
There are also (quite numerous) symptoms that may suggest it, such as: increased nervous tension, insomnia, mood depression bordering on depression and severe weakness. Of course, in the background there are always muscle contractions, tingling of the face, but there are palpitations, neuralgia in the chest, as well as seemingly no signs of tetany, and such can be fully considered, for example bloating and colic. With patients with tetany bind so-called Chvostek sign- violent spasms of facial muscles after impact with a medical device (usually a hammer) to the edge of our jaw (exactly in the margin of the rumen muscle). But in addition to these not too happy news we also have a good - the most sensitive test showing the presence of tetany is an electromyographic test, or EMG. Once we know how to track it, it's time to find out how to fight it.
Here it will be short, because the treatment of this abdomen consists in supplementation, respectively, of either calcium salt (in the form of calcium gluconate or calcium chloride) or magnesium. The key role in preventing such a disease state of our body is prevention, in the form of a proper diet, or rather avoiding substances that wash out calcium and magnesium from us (or impede the absorption of these minerals).
But this is a topic for another, broader study...
